4th Grade Social Studies Fair Project Ideas

Instructor: Anthony Cognata

Anthony has taught multiple grade levels in middle school, coached across contents, and has a master's degree in Educational Leadership.

Use these project ideas for a 4th Grade Social Studies Fair. Students deepen their understanding of Social Studies topics through the use of collaborative, engaging projects.

Why do a Social Studies Fair?

A critical part of any student's learning process is remembering facts and critically assessing multiple pieces of information to create their own interpretation or argument of overarching themes. Social Studies Fairs are unique opportunities for your students to present the information that they have learned over the course of a unit, semester or year. The following are three different options for your students to complete for a Social Studies Fair.

Whole Group Presentation

With this project, you provide students with a list of topics that can be applied from the previous unit or multiple units (if at the end of a semester or year) that the class has studied. Students should then take one chosen topic, research it, create a presentation (could be in PowerPoint, as a history board or another form), and then teach the rest of the class about their topic.

Goal: Students research and make a presentation on a topic related to what they have already learned.

Materials needed: Computer (PowerPoint access if that is their presentation method); list of historical topics to choose from; criteria for presentation; 3 minutes to present; and rubric for how you will grade their presentation of the material.

Theme/Topic Ideas: Examples include:

  • after completing a unit on the Indigenous People of North America, students could do their project comparing various Native American societies
  • after completing a unit on World Explorers, students could do their project on what Europeans brought to America and what they brought back from America
