6th Grade Spelling Games

Sixth graders can be hesitant about working on skills like spelling, but games can really get them going. The games in this lesson will give you some ideas for helping your students become proficient and enthusiastic spellers.

Why Spelling Games?

Sixth graders are often independent readers and writers, and they might be hesitant to work on skills like spelling, which they see as relevant to younger ages. However, many sixth graders still need to work on their spelling or need to work on spelling at a higher level. One way to get students engaged in spelling is via games. Games can have a competitive edge that helps motivate students, and they can also make spelling into something fun rather than tedious. The games in this lesson can be applied to a variety of different word lists and will help your sixth grade students develop their skills as spellers.

Word Sorts

A great way for sixth graders to have fun while still working on their spelling is to have them do word sorts. For word sorts, you will want to group students based on their spelling ability. You should give each group sets of words to sort into different categories. For instance, students might sort words that end with 'tion' from those that end with 'sion.' Students might sort words with Greek roots from those with Latin roots, or words with prefixes from those with suffixes. After students have sorted their words, they should talk with each other about their observations and look for these words in their independent reading. You can also challenge them to use these words in writing.
