Assignment Instructions for Students

In this course, you read the following short stories:

  • Edgar Allan Poe's ''The Cask of Amontillado''
  • Richard Connell's ''The Most Dangerous Game''
  • James Hurst's ''The Scarlet Ibis''

Choose one of the above short stories, or another you have read recently. Write an analytical essay containing an introduction, a three paragraph analysis of your chosen short story, and a conclusion. The three paragraph analysis should examine the following features of literary texts, as they relate to your chosen short story:

1) Plot

2) Characterization

3) Theme
