The Meeting

In Chapter 12 of A Wrinkle in Time, Meg is back on the planet Ixchel with the celestial beings: Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Which, and Mrs. Who as well as Aunt Beast. Meg's father, Mr. Murry, and her popular classmate, Calvin, are also there. The group is discussing how to save Meg's brother, Charles Wallace, who has been imprisoned on Camazotz by the monster brain, IT.

Who Should Rescue Charles Wallace?

Meg begins by begging the celestial beings to rescue Charles Wallace. They respond by telling her that it is not their way to interfere. Mr. Murry steps forward and asks them to teach him more about the special mode of traveling through time and space, called tessering. If he knew more, he could go to Camazotz and take his son away from IT. Mrs. Which tells him that he would not succeed if he tried.

Calvin speaks up next. He explains that in an earlier attempt to rescue Charles Wallace, he nearly succeeded. Mrs. Whatsit explains that Charles Wallace is even deeper into the beast than he was before, and for Calvin to attempt a rescue would result in his demise.

Meg grows increasingly upset when she realizes she is the only one who has not offered to go. She tells them that she cannot rescue Charles Wallace. After an emotional outburst of crying and punching Aunt Beast, she realizes that she must go. As soon as she tells the beings that she will go, she feels a sense of peace and acceptance because she realizes she is the only person in the room who can save her brother. Neither her father nor Calvin knows Charles Wallace well enough.

Mr. Murry expresses his concern that it will not be safe for Meg to go, and that if she does, she will certainly be killed. Calvin also repeats his demand to be the one who goes. Mrs Whatsit tells them both that they are making Meg's difficult decision even more difficult by interfering. The group compromises by agreeing that Mrs. Which should transport Meg to Camazotz.

Meg Goes to Camazotz

Before she leaves, Meg starts to doubt her decision and wonders if she will be able to save her brother or whether IT will kill her. The Mrs. W's each give Meg a gift to help her: Mrs. Who gives her a bible quote and Mrs. Whatsit gives Meg the gift of her love. Meg and Mrs. Which then tesser through the Black Thing and onto Camazotz. As Mrs. Which leaves Meg to her journey, she gives Meg her gift: a piece of information. She explains to Meg that she has something that IT does not have. If she can figure it out, that will be her weapon against IT.

As Meg walks towards the dome which houses IT, she ponders what she has that IT does not. When she enters the dome, she sees Charles Wallace crouched in the corner of the room, his forehead throbbing in rhythm with the pulsing of the large exposed brain belonging to IT. She continues to ask herself what she has that IT doesn't have. Charles Wallace, who is controlled by IT, tries to convince Meg that IT is friends with all the beings and that she has nothing that IT does not have.
