Alcoholics Anonymous Lesson Plan

Alcoholism is a serious epidemic, and knowing about the Alcoholics Anonymous program is one key to fighting the epidemic. Your students will become familiar with the program as they read and discuss a lesson, create sobriety posters, write support plans and take a quiz.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Define 'Alcoholics Anonymous'
  • Describe how the AA program works
  • Identify ways to support someone in AA

Curriculum Standards


Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to important distinctions the author makes and to any gaps or inconsistencies in the account.


Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., quantitative data, video, multimedia) in order to address a question or solve a problem.



  • Start the class by telling your students they are about to learn about something that can change their lives or the lives of someone they love or care about.
  • Pass out the What is Alcoholics Anonymous? - Definition, Meetings & Steps text lesson and read it together as a class.
  • Start from the beginning of the lesson and have different students read each paragraph in the lesson. Stop periodically for discussions.
  • Stop after reading the 'What is Alcoholism?' section. Ask and discuss the following:
    • What is a DUI?
    • What is alcoholism?
    • What does 'tolerance' mean?
    • What is addiction?
  • Continue reading through the 'Alcoholics Anonymous' section. Now ask and discuss:
    • What is the abbreviation for Alcoholics Anonymous?
    • What is Alcoholics Anonymous?
    • What is the overall purpose of AA?
  • Read through 'The AA Program' section. Ask and discuss:
    • When was AA first started?
    • What does 'sobriety' mean?
    • What is the Twelve Steps program?
    • What are some of the assignments of the Twelve Steps program?
    • What is an open meeting?
    • What is the purpose of a closed meeting?
  • Continue reading through to the end of 'The Road to Sobriety' section. Ask and discuss:
    • What is a sponsor?
    • How is the sponsor helpful to someone new to AA?
    • How is being a sponsor helpful to a person in recovery?
  • Read the 'Lesson Summary' to your students and answer any questions they have.
