Alternative Medicine for Cancer

Instructor: Artem Cheprasov

Artem has a doctor of veterinary medicine degree.

Alternative medicine might provide a person who has cancer with some potentially beneficial effects. It might also help with the side-effects of cancer treatment. Find out what these therapies might do.

What is Cancer?

You can hurt yourself. Yes, you can hit yourself in the head. But 'you' can also hurt yourself via cancer, which is the growth, invasion, and spread of abnormal body cells. In other words, your body's normal cells could hurt you if they turn abnormal and become cancerous cells. These cancerous cells will invade and destroy surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body.

There are a wide variety of cancers and many different kinds of traditional treatments are used to counteract it. Likewise, there are many alternative therapies for cancer. Because cancer is so lethal, you must ensure that you carefully discuss anything about alternative therapies for cancer with your doctor, as most currently have nothing more than anecdotal evidence for their purported effect.

With that in mind, let's discuss some of the alternative therapies for cancer.

Dietary Therapy

Let's meet Bob. Bob has cancer and he believes a sound diet can help fight it off. Because of this, Bob has constructed his own anti-cancer food pyramid, which he shows to you. At the base of his food pyramid is the whole grains section. Bob focuses on healthy whole grains, such as oats and brown rice.

Further up the anti-cancer food pyramid is the vegetable and food group. Bob has drawn in the following fruits, berries, roots, and vegetables that may help the body fight off cancer:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Asparagus
  • Sauerkraut
  • Tomatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Onions and garlic
  • Carrots
  • Apple
  • Kiwis

Even further up the food pyramid is the protein section. This includes the likes of beans, soy and soy products like tofu, clean-water fish, organically raised poultry, and eggs.

Bob flips the anti-cancer food pyramid over to show you the 'anti-anti-cancer' food pyramid, the stuff you should avoid eating if you have cancer. Bob tries to avoid artificial additives of any kind, like dyes, preservatives, and so on. He avoids apples that have wax on them. He doesn't eat meat that has been injected with red dyes. He avoids all sugar and sugary foods and drinks (this doesn't include natural sources of sugar like fruits). In this pyramid you also see drawings of saturated and hydrogenated fats as well as grilled or smoked meats like hot dogs and some kinds of salami.

Bob also proudly points to a word on this pyramid: nephalism. Bob is a nephalist, or teetotal -- someone who doesn't drink alcohol since it has been linked to cancer.

Supplements & Homeopathy

In addition to his specific diet, Bob also takes a number of specific supplements that have been linked to potentially having some anti-cancer effects. These supplements include:

  • Green tea
  • Fish oil
  • Glutathione, an antioxidant that may help repair the DNA in cells
  • Vitamin D3
  • Astragalus, an herb that might enhance your immune system's fight against cancer
  • Maitake, a mushroom that also enhances your immune system's ability to fight cancer

Homeopathic remedies can sometimes be used to help people recover from the side-effects of cancer treatments such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Vomiting, fatigue, and hair-loss might be combated with Cadmium Sulphuratum, partly of metallic origin. Nausea and vomiting might be counteracted with Ipecacuanham, of plant origin. Nux Vomica, which comes from the seeds of a tree, might be used to help relieve nausea and constipation.

Acupressure & Other Alternatives

Acupressure stimulation of certain points on the body might also be used as an alternative therapy for cancer or the treatment of side-effects. For instance:

  • Liver 4 is a point that can provide general pain relief when stimulated
  • Kidney 27 and Bladder 47 might help enhance your immune system when stimulated

Some people believe that using a sauna to simulate a fever in the body will help expel toxins in their sweat or stimulate the immune system to fight off the cancer.
