When teaching the Cold War, you may focus on international relations. However, it is important for students to learn about domestic life during this time. These essay prompts will get students thinking about life in America during the Cold War.

The Cold War and American Life

Are you teaching your students about modern American history? You will undoubtedly spend some time focusing their attention on the Cold War. We usually consider the Cold War to have lasted from 1945 to 1991. Though it involved primarily the United States and the Soviet Union, people all over the world were impacted by the militarization and political propaganda that ensued because of the fight between communism and capitalism. Part of teaching the Cold War involves teaching students about nuclear build-up, foreign wars, and international relations more broadly. However, it is also important for your students to learn and think about what life was like in the United States during the Cold War. One way to have them learn about this topic is by assigning essays that will not only require some extra research, but will also encourage critical thought and deep analysis. Use these essay prompts to get your students thinking about the Cold War and how it affected America.

Essay Prompts Regarding Politics

Part of learning about the Cold War involves studying its politics, such as the roles of major leaders in the US and Soviet Union, the possibly surprisingly positive impact of the Cold War on the American economy, and the extent to which militarization did or did not play a part in the Cold War.
