Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to do the following:

  • describe the engagements at Lexington, Concord, Fort Ticonderoga, and Bunker Hill
  • analyze the effect of each battle in leading to war between the British and the American colonists.

Length

40 minutes for the lesson and 40 minutes for the activity (1 hour 20 minutes total)

Instructions

Start by reviewing the political and economic situation between the American colonies and the United Kingdom of the time. Also, mention that, prior to the launch of the American Revolution, public opinion in the American colonies was far from decided in regards to independence.

Watch the lesson Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill: The American Revolution Begins, stopping for key terms and the following discussion points:

  • 1:10 - What role did spies play in the early battles of the Revolution? Which side won the early part of the spy war?
  • 4:33 - Coupled with the story of Paul Revere and others who sought to warn the minutemen, do you think that the British were being ambushed?
  • 7:08 - The colonists were doing well after Ticonderoga and Concord; do you think this may have emboldened the Continental Congress?
  • 8:20 - Discuss the cause and effect chain from Ticonderoga to the siege of Boston.
