Introduction to Among the Hidden

Among the Hidden is a novel about Luke Gardner, a twelve-year-old who should not have been born. Luke lives in a world where there are rules about how many children people can have. People are only supposed to have two children and any other children will be killed. But Luke is the third child so he has to hide so that no one knows he exists. One day, he meets another third child, Jen Talbot. Jen wants to do something, to protest to the government so that third children shouldn't have to hide. But Luke is scared and does not go with her. Jen is shot in the protest, and Luke has to go back into hiding. Given the chance to become Lee Grant, a child that died, he takes it but must live away from his family.
