Anatomical Directional Terms Activities

Instructor: Adrianne Baron

Adrianne has taught high school and college biology and has a master's degree in cancer biology.

Anatomical directional terms are used everyday by healthcare workers and scientists to communicate about the body in an almost fool-proof manner. Your high school students will learn the terms and how to use them by completing the following activities.

Anatomical Directional Terms

Healthcare workers rely on anatomical directional terms to communicate about the body effectively. The terms are also interesting to learn and know even if you are not in the healthcare field. Your high school students are going to become familiar with anatomical directional terms as they label diagrams, give directions using anatomical terms and act out the anatomical directions. These activities are designed to introduce to students the anatomical directional terms and help students commit them to memory.

Label the Diagram

Developing a mental picture of the body will help to start the learning process for anatomical directions. This picture can start being developed by having students label a diagram of the body. For added reinforcement, you could have the students color-code the labels based on terms being similar or opposite.
