With long sharp teeth and unusual habits, the angler fish is one of the scariest fish that you will learn about. Read on to learn what exactly makes the angler fish so terrifying!

What is an Anglerfish?

An anglerfish is a type of fish that lives deep in the ocean. It finds food by angling prey in with a light that comes off the front of its head, which acts like a fishing lure. The fishing lure on the anglerfish is called the illicium. The anglerfish lives in the deepest part of the ocean where there is no light. Having no light makes it hard for fish to find food. The anglerfish has become good at finding food by lighting up the tip of the illicium, which brings in smaller fish for them to eat. Take a look at the picture below to see the long sharp teeth and glowing illicium of the angler fish.

Notice that the teeth are long and sharp, and also that they are pointed inward. Having teeth that are pointed inward makes it easier for the anglerfish to bite down onto its food and keep hold of it.

Reproduction of Anglerfish

It is hard for anglerfish to find a partner to reproduce because there are so few of them swimming around in the ocean. When the anglerfish do find each other they don't want to let their partner go and lose them. The anglerfish have a very special way of holding on; the male anglerfish attaches himself to the female. Over time, the male fish grows into the female and loses his ability to swim at all.
