Aphid Lesson Plan

Teach your students what an aphid is and closely examine four main types with this lesson plan. Students will use a text lesson for guidance, play a game, take a formative quiz, and do a culminating project.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define 'aphid'
  • identify the characteristics of an aphid
  • list and describe the four most common types of aphids

Warm-Up and Preparation

  • Share images of insects with students ask them to notice features of each.
  • Now give students time to record their ideas on paper, comparing and contrasting as they go. How are the insects alike? How are they different?
  • Focus on comparing the aphids to another type of insect. What is the same between the two types of bugs? What is different?
  • Tell students they will be learning about the tiny insect called the aphid. Allow them to share prior knowledge and preview vocabulary.
