This lesson contains a template for teachers and coaches to use with their student athletes. This template is the basis for a behavior contract signed by student athletes as well as their parents, teachers, and coaches.

Student Athlete Behavior Contracts

The student athlete is a non-professional position where students in secondary and post-secondary education are also tasked with the role of representing their school as an amateur athlete. In this role, students are not paid for their services, and must agree to certain requirements to participate in their sport(s). These requirements can cover many different mandates for student athletes such as weight restrictions, maintaining a certain grade point average, attendance and classroom behavior rules, and behavior and conduct prohibitions.

Studies have shown that when teachers and coaches use athlete behavior contracts with student athletes, their behavior/conduct, grades, and overall attitude about school improve. Today, most coaches use some form of behavior contract with their students on the post-secondary level as most colleges and universities have strict rules of conduct for their athletes who are granted athletic scholarships.

Coaches who work with secondary students are now using them as well to help them reinforce good character and behavior in their students inside the classroom, and on and off the field of play. This lesson will include a template for coaches and teachers to use with secondary student athletes that has consequences that are specific to athletics.

Athlete Behavior Contract Examples

The athlete behavior contract is a form that coaches and teachers can use with student athletes that requires them to adhere to rules and regulations on their behavior with consequences attached for nonconformity. These contracts are in no way a guarantee that student athletes will behave and abide by the terms set forth by their teachers and coaches, but does work to help student athletes understand the requirements to participate in athletics as school representatives.

The athlete behavior contract is also a way for coaches and teachers to get parents involved in helping their student athletes improve and maintain their behavior on and off the field. Here is an example of an athlete behavior contract that can used by teachers and coaches alike with student athletes.
