Australia is a country and also a continent sometimes called the 'Land Down Under.' In this lesson, explore the food, entertainment, and recreational activities that make up the culture of this amazing place.

Land Down Under

Below the equator, there is an enormous island country surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This country is Australia, and it is also one of the seven continents. Australian culture includes a blend of native aboriginal culture and British culture as well as influences from Asia, and includes outdoor sports and activities as well as an appreciation of the arts. Let's find out more about the culture of the Land Down Under!

Sports and Activities

Sporting events are big attractions in Australia. One of the most popular sports is called Australian Rules Football. This game has some rules that are similar to American football and soccer. Teams across the country compete for the chance to play in the final match held in September.

This stadium in Melbourne is where the final match of Australian Rules Football is played each year.
Australian recreation

Australia is a large island, which means all of its borders are coastline. Therefore, many residents enjoy water activities like swimming, surfing, and water skiing. Beach volleyball is a favorite activity as well. However, the seasons in Australia are different from those in America. So in December and January when you are bundled up in a blanket and drinking hot chocolate, Australians are out on the beach!

Arts and Entertainment

Australians enjoy the visual and performing arts. The city Sydney is home to one of the most famous cultural landmarks in the world, the Sydney Opera House. The architecture of this building is one-of-a-kind, and it sits on the harbor with views of the water. Here, many opera singers perform, as well as other musical and theatrical acts.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous arts landmarks in the world.
Australian arts

Within the opera house, there are areas to view visual arts like paintings and sculptures. In addition to the opera house, there are many museums in major cities like Melbourne and Brisbane where you can view historical artwork and amazing photography.

Australian Food

There are some unique dishes that Australians enjoy. If you travel to the country, you might enjoy a meat pie for lunch or dinner. Australians love to grill out in the warm weather, so a common lunch item is a sausage sanger, which is a grilled sausage with sauce inside a folded piece of bread.
