Aztec Sun Art Lesson Plan

Instructor: Mary Beth Burns

Mary Beth has taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade and has a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. She is currently an assistant principal.

With this lesson plan, students learn more about Aztec Sun art, specifically the Aztec Sun Stone. Students are encouraged to make real-world connections and think critically throughout the lesson plan.

Lesson Objectives

  • Analyze an informational text about the Aztec Sun Stone through collaborative discussion
  • Compare and contrast the Aztec Sun Stone with other famous pieces of Aztec art
  • Explain the significance and symbolism of the Aztec Sun Stone

Materials

  • Copies of Aztec Sun: Symbol, Meaning and Design, one per student
  • Copies of the lesson quiz, one per student
  • Blank Venn diagrams, one per student
  • Photographs of the following pieces of Aztec art, one copy per student:
    • Montezuma's headdress
    • Stone of Tizoc
    • Coatlicue
  • Photograph of the Aztec Sun Stone, one per student
  • Glue sticks
  • Mobile devices or computers
  • Four or five calendars
