Basic Operations and Equations Activities for Middle School Math

Instructor: Clio Stearns

Clio has taught education courses at the college level and has a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.

As a middle school math teacher, you are often tasked with reminding your students how to compute equations using the basic operations. This lesson offers some activities you can use to supplement your instruction.

Teaching Operations and Equations

If you teach math at the middle school level, then you are simultaneously helping your students consolidate what they learned mathematically in elementary school and preparing them for the complexity and abstraction of high school level math. At the same time, you are working on keeping your students engaged and motivated as they work on mathematics.

To move on mathematically, your students will need a really solid grasp of the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will need to know how to use each of these operations is used in simple and more complicated equations.

The activities in this lesson give your students a chance to work from different learning styles and strengths as they work on operations and equations.

Visual Activities

In this section, you will find activities that appeal to visual learners as they work on operations and equations.

Images for Operations

Let students work in small groups for this activity and assign each group one of the four operations.

Ask them to start by writing a series of five problems with the operation, making the problems increase in complexity and difficulty. Then, have them make a poster that include visuals in the form of charts, graphs, or illustrations to show how they would solve each of the problems. Lastly, let students share their posters with their classmates and reference them as they continue solving problems.
