Bats Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

What are bats and how are they unique? This lesson plan uses a text lesson to highlight important facts about bats. An activity challenges students to create their own bat using an outline of their hand.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • list key characteristics of bats
  • distinguish between the different types of bats

Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Materials

  • Assorted photographs of bats
  • Full color paper copies of the text lesson Types of Bats: Lesson for Kids
  • Measuring tape
  • A worksheet created using the quiz from the associated text lesson
  • White drawing paper
  • Markers
