Instructor: Tammy Galloway

Tammy teaches business courses at the post-secondary and secondary level and has a master's of business administration in finance.

''Winn Dixie'' is a fun read while exploring the emotions of a little girl due to the loss of her mother and dog. These activities correlate with the story line.

Map of Florida

Because of Winn Dixie takes place in Naomi, Florida. This activity will familiarize students with the state of Florida and the surrounding bodies of water.

Materials

  • Blank map of Florida and surrounding oceans
  • Markers
  • Crayons

Instructions

Ask students if they remember where Opal and her father moved to and the city they moved from. Remind your students that Opal and her father moved from Watley, Florida to Naomi, Florida. While Watley and Naomi are fictional cities, the actual state is real.

Distribute the blank map of Florida. Have them locate and identify the major cities in Florida: Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Hialeah, Tallahassee, Fort Lauderdale, Port St. Lucie, and Pembroke Pines. Also, have students identify the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.

Students can use a symbol of their choice to identify the cities, however, ask them to place a star next to the capital of Florida, Tallahassee. Allow students to decorate the map, and then share with the class.
