  • Describe how Opal and Winn-Dixie meet. Where does the dog get his name?
  • What role does Opal's mother play in her life?
  • How does the author describe Gloria Dump? What interactions does she have with Opal that help Opal feel cared for?
  • Why does Opal want to make Sweetie Pie happy? Why is Sweetie Pie unhappy?
  • What amazing thing did Miss Franny Block do? What does this tell you about her character?
  • What is unique about Otis and his pet store?

Winn-Dixie Questions - Setting

  • Opal and her father, a preacher, move around a lot. Where do they live in this story?
  • Authors use specific language to help readers create mental images of setting. Choose one setting from the story and draw and describe your mental image.
  • The town Opal lives in is Naomi, Florida. What is it about this town that makes her miss her mother?
  • Think about the church Opal's father preaches at, Open Arms Baptist Church. What is it like? Who attends it? Does it live up to its name?
