Where is Belgium?

Imagine walking through an airport, and the first thing you see is a wonderful chocolate shop. You know this is going to be a great vacation! You've just landed in Belgium, and there is much more to this country than chocolate!

Belgium is a small country in the western part of Europe. It shares a border with France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

Its capital is Brussels, and the entire country is so tiny it would fit inside of Texas more than 22 times!

When you think of summer, you probably think of heat, but the average summer temperature in Brussels is 64 degrees, and the average winter temperature is 37 degrees. However, Belgium also has beaches on the North Sea where it's warmer and more humid.

The Three Regions of Belgium

Belgium has three regions, kind of like the United States is broken into states. Each region has control over its economy, just like states have their own economies and budgets. But unlike the U.S., there are three official languages, which are Dutch, French and German, and they're spoken in the different regions.

Those regions are:

  • Flanders in the northern part of the country, where the official language is Dutch
  • Wallonia in the south; the official language is French, but there is also a German-speaking area
  • Brussels-Capital, in the middle of the country, where both French and Dutch are spoken
