Biomes Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Adrianne has taught high school and college biology and has a master's degree in cancer biology.

Students can learn about the different biomes of earth in many ways. This lesson plan utilizes a reading passage, group activity, and individual quiz assessment to teach students about biomes.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the basic land and marine biomes
  • Describe basic characteristics and locations for each biome

Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.4

Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.

Materials

  • Computers
  • Poster boards
  • Colored pencils and/or markers

Instructions

  • Start your students learning about biomes by having them read Biome Lesson for Kids.
  • After they complete the reading portion, have a class discussion about the different land and marine biomes. For each one, discuss a few major characteristics for each biome. This should include where they are located, animals, plants, and climate.
  • Have a question and answer session with your students. Ask them questions about the biomes such as:
    • What is the climate of the tundra?
    • What are some examples of a tropical rainforest?
    • What animals live in the taiga?
    • What type of biome is a river or lake?
    • What is the most abundant biome on earth?
