In this lesson, we'll learn about the field of bivariate statistics. You'll explore the types of tests used and see examples of this form of statistics in the real world.

Bivariate Statistics

The two categories of statistics are univariate and bivariate statistics. Unlike univariate statistics, bivariate statistics uses two variables as opposed to just one. Psychologists enjoy working with two variables because they are able to then determine if relationships exist and associations are present. Also, with bivariate statistics you can test a hypothesis. Let's take a look at some tests used in bivariate statistics in relation to the field of psychology.

T-Test

A common bivariate statistical test used in the field of psychology is the t-test. This test is designed to allow for hypothesis testing and looks to see if there is a difference between the mean score between two groups. Why would a psychologist be interested in using the t-test? Let's take a look at an example.

Imagine you are a psychologist and interested in learning if there was a difference between how your male clients experience stress versus how your female clients experience stress. You would ask your clients to complete a survey, locate the mean score for both groups, and then determine if there is a difference between their mean scores. Your hypothesis might be, 'there is no difference between the genders' or 'there is a difference in how male clients experience stress as opposed to female clients.' Once you've conducted the test you would be able to determine which statement is true. Either there is a difference in stress among the genders or there is not a difference.

Again, the t-test helps you determine if there is a difference between the two groups. How is the t-test helpful? It is often helpful to determine how different groups respond to varying situations. By conducting the t-test you can learn how two groups differ in terms of how they respond, how they react, what is helpful, or what is not helpful.

Chi-Square Test of Association

Another common test used in the field of psychology is the chi-square test of association. This test determines if there is a relationship between two variables. The exact statistical formula for completing this test is quite complex and is most often determined through statistical formulation software. However, let's look at an example as to when using this test would be helpful in the field of psychology.
