Body Awareness Lesson Plan

Adrianne has a master's degree in cancer biology and has taught high school and college biology.

Your students are at the age where they are becoming very aware of their bodies. They will enjoy learning about body awareness through a video, group activity and quiz.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this lesson students will be able to:

  • Define 'body awareness'
  • Describe how body awareness develops
  • Explain the levels of body awareness

Length

1.5-2 hours

Materials

  • Computer with projector
  • White poster boards
  • Colored pencils, markers, scissors, glue
  • Student computers
  • Index cards with a different body part written on each one
  • Printer paper
  • Health magazines
  • Copies of the lesson quiz

Instruction

  • Begin the lesson by telling your students that they are going to learn about body awareness today.
  • Ask them to tell you what they think body awareness means. Let a few students answer.
  • Next, explain that they are going to watch and discuss the Body Awareness: Definitions & Explanations video to see how close their explanations are.
  • Start playing the lesson for your students using the computer with projector.
  • Pause the video at 0:44, then ask and discuss:
    • What is body awareness?
    • Have your students stand up and close their eyes. Tell them to touch their nose and then to lift one foot. Tell them they can do this because they are aware of their bodies.
  • Continue playing the video and then pause it again at 2:16 to ask and discuss the following:
    • What is gross motor development?
    • What is fine motor development?
    • How do they relate to body awareness?
    • What is balance?
    • When does body awareness develop?
  • Continue playing the video until 3:39. Pause the video, then ask and discuss:
    • What is the first step in body awareness?
    • What causes body awareness to advance?
  • Play the rest of the video for your students.
