Epic Road Trip

If you're one of the millions of people who have read John Greene's Paper Towns, then you'd probably agree that the road trip Quentin and his friends go on is an epic coming-of-age adventure. As Quentin's childhood friend, Margo, disappears on the eve of graduation, he decides to find out what really happened. Fearing she'd been kidnapped, Quentin and his friends follow a series of clues that lead them to a paper town called Agloe. In this 'paper town,' they are in for a surprising conclusion to their adventure, as Quentin realizes Margo isn't the girl he thought he knew.

If you have students who enjoyed Quentin's adventure, there are plenty of other books for them to explore. Let's look at some books that are similar to Paper Towns.

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

In 13 Little Blue Envelopes, Ginny Blackstone receives a letter from her dead Aunt Peg that contains money and a plane ticket. One little blue envelope sets off Ginny's journey through Europe to find twelve other envelopes meticulously placed by Aunt Peg before her death. These envelopes take her on great adventures as she explores Aunt Peg's life and her true identity. Ginny also learns a lot about herself as she travels from London to Amsterdam and beyond.

Much like Quentin discovered himself while searching for Margo, Ginny's travels help her define who she is. Additionally, if students enjoyed the element of mystery as Quentin searched for Margo, they will enjoy the trail of clues that Ginny follows as her dead aunt leads her around Europe.

Reunited by Hilary Weisman Graham

Reunited is the story of three friends, Alice, Summer, and Tiernan, who recently reunited after a falling out. As they approach graduation, these friends decide to go on a road trip across the country to see their favorite band, Level3, in a reunion show. The girls encounter troubles on the road and their newly reformed friendships are put to the test.

Students who enjoyed the dialogue and relationships between Quentin and his friends as they traveled in search of Margo will definitely appreciate traveling with Alice, Summer, and Tiernan.

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

The mysterious disappearance of a girl is the launch pad for this novel. When Roza turns up missing, everyone in the town of Bone Gap assumes she just up and left. Finn, however, believes she's been kidnapped, and he's out to prove it. Through the stories of Finn, Roza, and other people in the town, students can explore exactly what happened to Roza.

Just like Quentin set out to find the truth about Margo's disappearance, Finn searches for answers about Roza. Students that liked the twists and turns of the plot in Paper Towns should enjoy this riveting tale.
