History

Imagine that you're responsible for getting a bunch of sheep together and moving them from one place to another, all the while going up, around, and over hills. That would be difficult, wouldn't it? In an attempt to reduce the workload, farmers specifically bred Border Collies to herd sheep in the hilly border land known as Northumberland, located between Scotland and England. At the end of the 19th century, Border Collies gained popularity when the winner of a large dog competition happened to be a Border Collie named ''Old Hemp.''

Temperament

Understanding a dog's temperament, or its attitude toward other animals and people, is very important for anyone looking to add a furry family member. Border Collies are friendly companions. However, they need a lot of attention and exercise. Left alone, they're known to develop separation anxiety and get into all kinds of trouble. Because of their herding nature, Border Collies often like to boss around and herd other, smaller animals.
