Return from the Ritual

Upon returning from the ritual at the Reservation, during which they met Linda and John, Lenina Crowne and Bernard Marx could not have more different reactions. Lenina remarks that she's entitled to three whole grams of soma after the day she's had. In other words, she's down for the count. Meanwhile, Bernard can't sleep after all he's seen. As soon as he can, Bernard makes plans to go to Santa Fe so he can try to find a way to bring Linda and John back to London. To do this, he leaves Lenina in the room, knowing that the soma will keep her unconscious long enough for him to finish his work.

Sufficient Scientific Interest

Bernard makes it to Santa Fe and immediately calls the only person capable of issuing the permits to allow Linda and John to leave the Reservation, World Controller Mustapha Mond. The importance of Mustapha is underlined by the fact that Bernard has to talk to four secretaries to get to him, but the urgency of this matter is in turn expressed by the speed with which each passes his concern up the chain.

Bernard manages to convince Mustapha to authorize the transfer of Linda and John back to London, saying that he has a considerable scientific interest in seeing how the two function in London society. Upon his return to the Reservation, Bernard starts to feel the first effects of having 'discovered' John, namely in that he can now mention having spoken with Mustapha Mond as if it were a routine occurrence.

Almost Peeping John

Meanwhile, John has been waiting on Bernard and is growing inpatient. All this time he is afraid that Bernard, and more importantly Lenina, have left without him. Finally, he jumps through the window of the house where they are staying to check. Upon entering the room he immediately finds Lenina's clothes. Having never seen a zipper before, he plays with the zipper of a discarded pair of shorts, then smells her perfume on her scarf and handkerchief. Further exploring the suite, he finds Lenina passed out on a bed in the adjoining room. She is very clearly mentally far away from the goings on of the Reservation and the guesthouse, but all John can think about is her.
