Buddhism Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Use this lesson plan to teach your students about Buddhism. Students will use a text lesson to learn the history of the religion and its core beliefs. Discuss and analyze content together, then apply understanding to an activity.

  • describe Buddha and the major beliefs of Buddhism

Warm Up and Preparation

  • Start the class by gathering the students onto your carpet area or allowing them to find a quiet spot to sit in the classroom.
  • Tell them you're going to do a guided meditation. Explain how this works, then begin.
  • When finished, ask students to open their eyes and return to their desks.
  • Now ask them to think about how the meditation made them feel and their experience with it, and then ask them to write about it.
  • Divide students into partners and have them share their writing, discussing how they felt during and after the meditation.
  • Ask the following:
    • What emotions did you feel during and after the meditation?
    • How do you think meditation can help people?
    • Why do you think meditation helps people?
