Bug Science Experiments for Preschool

Instructor: Clio Stearns

So many young children are naturally fascinated by bugs, while others are scared of them. This lesson provides ideas for science experiments that will appeal to all of these groups of preschool-aged children.

Doing Bug Science at Preschool

Whether you are a parent or a teacher of a preschool child, you probably know that bugs are a major topic of interest at this age. Some preschool kids are so interested in bugs that they follow them around and talk about them constantly. Other preschoolers are terrified of bugs, which can make it really difficult to play outdoors. Still more preschoolers take out their natural aggression by looking for tiny bugs to kill everywhere!

Whatever the relationship of your preschooler to bugs, learning more about these small creatures, including what they are and how they behave, can make a big difference. Fascinated kids will learn about the experimentation process, frightened kids will come to grips with their concerns, and aggressors will start thinking of bugs as valuable, living creatures when they learn more about them. The science experiments in this lesson are good for students at the preschool age who want to learn more about bugs.

Science Experiments

Each experiment offered here will teach young kids more about bugs while also gradually familiarizing them with aspects of the scientific method that they will use throughout their education and life.
