If you are getting ready to take the BULATS Business English test, you might be thinking about the multiple-choice gap-fill section. This lesson provides you with the strategies you will need to succeed on this section.

Taking the BULATS Business English Test

Are you preparing yourself to take the BULATS Business English test? If so, you have a lot to be excited about. This test will give you a chance to showcase your grasp of business English, or the English language that is relevant to work in businesses, organizations, and the marketplace.

The BULATS Business English test is divided into different sections. One section you might be thinking about is the multiple-choice gap-fill exercise. This section will give you a paragraph or short passage that is missing multiple words. You will be provided with four answer choices for each gap in the passage, and your task is to choose the best options to complete the passage.

Though it can feel overwhelming to face a passage with more than one blank, there is no need to feel stressed. The strategies in this lesson will help you feel better prepared for success on the multiple-choice gap-fill section.

Read From Start to Finish

First of all, it is important to remember that this section of the BULATS Business English test is essentially a reading test. Its goal to to assess your comprehension and vocabulary when it comes to reading what you need to know in English in the business world.

This means that it is especially important for you to read the passage from start to finish. Before even trying to choose the first answer, start at the beginning of the passage and read all the way to the end. You will get a sense of what the passage is all about and you will be better equipped to make the right choices of words in the broader context and meaning of the passage.

Try Out Each Choice

Then, it will be time for you to go back and choose items for each of the blanks in the passage. You are ready to focus on the blanks in the passage one at a time at this point. When you focus in on a blank, read each of the answer choices that are offered.

Try out each of the available choices in your mind and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does this choice make sense grammatically within the sentence?
  • Does this choice make sense in the sentence in terms of meaning?
  • Does this choice make sense within the context of the overall passage?

Once you have found the choice where you can answer 'yes' to all of those questions, you are probably ready to make your selection.

Hear the Passage in Your Mind

It can also be helpful at times to hear the passage in your mind as you go through making your choices. Think of an English teacher or mentor in the business world and imagine them reading the passage to you.
