Activities are a great way to teach and reinforce concepts and deepen understanding of reading. Use this lesson plan to plan activities for your students as they read the novel Bunnicula.

Activities for Learning

Books are great tools for teaching students important skills about reading, such as comprehension skills, vocabulary development, and literary elements. But great books can also teach young children a love for reading, planting seeds for a life-long relationship with books. Bunnicula is just the kind of book to hook young readers on their path to becoming a book lover.

While they're busy falling in love with Bunnicula and friends, though, you're still responsible for making sure they learn about those skills we talked about above. Incorporating learning activities and games is a natural way for this to happen. Children's brains are wired to play - that's how they learn. So capitalize on their nature and set up these learning opportunities to coordinate with Bunnicula. It's a win-win.

Vocabulary Activities for Bunnicula

Vocabulary acquisition is linked to all kinds of high-level smarts. Ditch the boring sentence writing and get your students ready to learn and remember key vocabulary with these fun games and activities.

  • Class Dictionary

Before each unit, or before reading the book, divide students into small groups. Assign each group a few vocabulary words found in the text and instruct them to define the word (in whatever way your school/class specifies) and accompany it with an illustration. Create a template for final drafts, then put the book together to create a class dictionary for Bunnicula.

Tip - Do this activity with other novel studies, building a strong class library of dictionaries your students will reach for again and again.
