Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe is a classic story of what happens when individuals have a misunderstanding. Told by Harold, the family dog, Bunnicula is the story of what happens when Chester the cat fears that the new pet rabbit is a vampire. The book is a fun read that points to a number of meaningful discussion topics. When you read Bunnicula with your elementary students, use these questions for conversation starters.

Pre-Reading Questions

  • Harold says he comes from a typical American family. What do you think of when you hear the phrase ''typical family''? What do you think Harold means? How does that introduction affect your expectations for the book?
  • What qualities do you look for in a reliable narrator? What might make a narrator unreliable?
  • How do you treat your pets? What is important when caring for a pet?
  • What do you do when you meet someone new?
