Butterfly Projects for Kids

If you are teaching your students about butterflies, you might want to get them involved in exciting long-term projects. This lesson offers ideas for projects that will enhance what your students understand about these special insects.

The Beautiful Butterfly

For children, there are fewer natural phenomena more filled with beauty and wonder than the butterfly. Whether children are interested in learning about butterflies as a window into biodiversity, studying the way butterflies interact with other plant and animal species, or learning about the life cycle of the butterfly, they are sure to find plenty to be fascinated about once they get themselves going.

One way to help your students learn as much as possible about butterflies is to incorporate projects into your instruction. Working on projects gives students an opportunity to plan something out and add to it over time. Many projects are also collaborative, giving students the chance to learn more from each other and from one another's strengths.

The projects in this lesson help students with different learning styles understand butterflies.

Butterfly Projects

Life Cycle Map

This project is wonderful for the visual learners among your students, who often internalize knowledge better when they work with images and graphic organizers. Students should work in small groups to complete this project.

Have students research the life cycle of the butterfly, beginning as a caterpillar egg. Then, give each small group a poster and ask them to create a diagram mapping out the life cycle they have learned about. Each stage in the life cycle should include images as well as an explanation, and students should draw arrows to show the movement from one stage to the next.
