This lesson is all about the verb ''caer'' (to fall) and its future tense conjugations. We will learn how to express future possibilities for each pronoun while expanding our vocabulary and making an unexpected discovery about this verb's meaning.

Translation Of The Verb Caer

How are you feeling today? Are you up for a little romantic inspiration? Here you go:

El amor es como el relámpago: se desconoce dónde caerá hasta que cae. ('Love is like lightning: it's unknown where it will fall until it falls') - Henri Lacordaire

Did you notice? Our new verb caer appeared twice in this beautiful sentence, once in a present tense form, cae, and another time in a future tense form, caerá. However, let's look at the translations of caer first before looking deeper into its future tense conjugations.

With caer there are two aspects to it: the obvious and the more hidden meanings. Let's look at the obvious translation first: caer translates as 'to fall', as in 'snow will fall': la nieve caerá, or La manzana nunca cae lejos del árbol ('The apple never falls far from the tree').

la manzana, the apple
apple tree

The second translation refers to caer as an expression which indicates whether you like or dislike someone: Ella me cae bien literally means 'She falls good to me', which can be translated to 'I like her'. So, caer bien means to 'fall good', to like. What would caer mal mean accordingly? You are absolutely right, it means to dislike, as in 'Tú me caes mal', 'You fall bad to me' or 'I dislike you'.

Future Tense Conjugations

Do you remember how to build the future tense? Let's take a quick look.

The future tense in Spanish expresses what 'will' happen, or what 'shall' happen. To build the future conjugations is actually quite easy for regular verbs like caer! You simply add specific endings to the infinitive form of the verb (caer).

Pronoun Conjugated verb in Future tense Pronunciation Translation
Yo caeré kah-ay-RAY I will fall
caerás kah-ay-RAHS You will fall
Él, ella, Usted caerá kah-ay-RAH He, she, you (formal) will fall
Nosotros, nosotras caeremos kah-ay-RAY-mohs We (male, female) will fall
Vosotros, vosotras caeréis kah-ay-RAHIYS You (plural, male; plural, female) will fall
Ellos, ellas, Ustedes caerán kah-ay-RAHN They (male, female), you (plural, formal) will fall

To make sure that you know how and when to apply the future tense conjugations of caer, let's explore an example conversation together:

Example Conversation

Roberto and Julieta are newly in love.

Roberto: Siempre te amaré Julieta. ('I will always love you Julieta'). Siempre me caerás bien. (' I will always like you.')

Julieta: ¿Y en veinte años qué? ('And what about in twenty years?') ¿ Cuando las hojas caerán de los árboles? ('Once the leaves will fall from the trees?')

¿Y la nieve caerá del cielo? ('And the snow will fall from the sky?')
