Calcium Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

This lesson plan is a tool for helping teachers instruct elementary students about the mineral calcium. Students will learn why calcium is important and how to get their daily dose of calcium from the foods they eat.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson on calcium, students will be able to:

  • ask and answer questions about calcium.
  • summarize the importance of consuming calcium daily.
  • develop a plan for getting their daily supply of calcium.

Reading & Discussion Questions

  • Preview vocabulary with students prior to reading the lesson.
  • Read Calcium Facts: Lesson for Kids as a class, and ask the following discussion questions:
    • What is calcium?
    • What parts of your body need calcium? Why?
    • Why is calcium important for children?
    • How much calcium do most children need?
    • What are some dairy products that contain calcium?
    • What are some vegetables that contain calcium?
    • What other foods contain calcium?
    • Turn and talk: What have you consumed with calcium in it today?
  • Ask if there are any questions, then give the students the lesson's printable quiz worksheet to check for understanding.
  • Check the answers as a class.
