(+) Develop a probability distribution for a random variable defined for a sample space in which theoretical probabilities can be calculated; find the expected value. For example, find the theoretical probability distribution for the number of correct answers obtained by guessing on all five questions of a multiple-choice test where each question has four choices, and find the expected grade under various grading schemes.

Instructions

  • Let your students know they will be studying permutations, and how to calculate them.
  • Ask your students if they are familiar with permutations, or if they have studied them in the past.
  • Read the short introduction to the video lesson.
  • Start the video How to Calculate a Permutation and pause for the first time at 2:45.
    • How are permutations and factorials related?
    • If you were playing a new card game where you were dealt eight cards, how many possible ways could you arrange your cards?
  • Next, restart the video and pause for a second time at 5:53.
    • How do you write the notation for permutations?
    • If a snack bar had 10 pizza toppings, but this time it offered a maximum of five toppings instead of four toppings, how many types of pizza would be offered?
  • Restart the video and view the 'Lesson Summary' section on permutations.
  • Lastly, administer the lesson quiz to your students to determine the extent of their newly acquired knowledge.
