Camping Questions for ESL Students

Instructor: Sarah Mills

Sarah is an educational freelance writer and has taught English and ESL in grades k-12 and college. She has a master's degree in both Literacy and TESOL.

In this lesson, teachers will learn about engaging English as a Second Language (ESL) students in a discussion about camping. A list of discussion questions related to camping will be included.

Learning About Camping

From sleepaway camps to family vacations, camping is a popular American pastime. Many people enjoy the warmth of a crackling campfire and the majestic view of a star-filled night sky. However, some ESL students may not be familiar with the activity of camping. Facilitating discussions about camping in your classroom is a good way to teach ESL students about American culture while also improving their oral language development and social skills.

You can give pairs of students copies of discussion questions and have them practice asking each other the questions and answering them in complete sentences. Discussion questions also work well in small group formats. These questions could even be used by students individually as journal prompts at the beginning of each class period.

Let's look at some specific questions relating to students' background knowledge of, experiences with, and opinions about camping.
