Use this lesson plan to teach your students about artist Charles Demuth. Students will read a text lesson that provides a biography of Demuth and guides analysis of his work. Students apply learning to their own artwork and take a quiz to check understanding.

Warm Up

  • Give each student a piece from the prepared Demuth paintings and instruct them to stand and find others in the class with pieces of the same painting, putting them together like a puzzle.
  • When groups have their images together, allow them to tape to secure.
  • Now, ask them to analyze the painting, noticing aspects such as use of color, light, shapes, and subject matter.
  • Discuss these aspects as a whole class. Ask if students know the artist, then let them know the work is by Charles Demuth.
