China Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Jennifer has taught elementary levels K-3 and has master's degrees in elementary education and curriculum/instruction and educational leadership.

Students will enjoy learning about China with this interactive lesson plan. They will read information and create presentations about Chinese history, government, geography, economics, and people. Students will then learn from each other as they present their findings.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • describe the Chinese government and its history.
  • identify important aspects of China's geography.
  • explain how China has been a strong global economic power.
  • describe China's population and how it is changing.


45 - 60 minutes (additional time if performing Internet research for the activity)

Curriculum Standards


Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.


Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.


  • 5-6 copies of the lesson China Lesson for Kids: History & Facts; cut the lesson into individual sections so that they are isolated
  • Copies of the lesson quiz/printable worksheet, one copy per student
  • Map of China
  • Markers and colored pencils
  • Internet access (optional)
  • 4 pieces of poster board or large sheets of white construction paper
  • Notebook paper for recording information


  • Write the word 'China' on the board.
    • With a partner, share everything you know about this country.
  • After giving pairs a minute or two to share, have students share with the class as you write down their information on the board.
  • Show students the map of China so they can get a sense of its location in the world.
  • Then, read the 'Introduction' and 'History and Progress' section of the lesson China Lesson for Kids: History & Facts to the students.
  • Tell students that today they will be learning about a specific aspect of China, creating a presentation, and then sharing with their classmates.
