There are many religions in the world, but how did Christianity get started? What do Christians believe in? Why has Christianity spread so far? Learn the answers to those questions in this lesson.

What Do Christians Do?

Did you know that school and the publishing of books came from Christian influence? Catholic monks needed to be able to read the Bible, and this gave birth to the very first schools. Hospitals, orphanages, homeless shelters and libraries were also started by Christians.

One of the characteristics of a Christian is charitable acts. Charity means generous gifts of love to help the poor. Let's look at what it means to be a Christian and how Christianity spread.

What Is a Christian?

Christianity goes all the way back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When they ate the apple, it was the first act of disobedience to God, and sin was in the world. God then chose Abraham to create a people that would be God's people and live by God's laws. Abraham was led to the promised land now called Israel.

Several times in the history of God's people, they became slaves to other people because of their disobedience. Thanks to Moses, the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. They even wandered in the desert for 40 years because of their disobedience to God!

God's laws told the people they would have to sacrifice animals to cover their sins and stay in a relationship with him. A sacrifice is giving something up for a better purpose. In this case, they had to kill an animal so God would not see their sin.

Many, many years later, Jesus was born. More important, though, was the death on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus. This means he rose to life again, proving he was God. Christians believe that Jesus was the final sacrifice for us all, and that people's sins are forgiven if they believe in him. Jesus' sacrifice made it so God would not have to keep punishing his people.

How Did Christianity Spread?

Jesus instructing the disciples
Disciples Instruction

Jesus gave instructions to his disciples: They were to go out and share the gospel with the world. The gospel is the miracles and teachings of Jesus. After Jesus went to heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit to live in the disciples and keep them in close relationship with God. The disciples started in Jerusalem and Samaria, which were the split kingdoms of Israel, and then traveled to places like Greece and Rome. They traveled to many other countries, including India, where some of the first churches were started.
