Citizenship Lesson Plan

While many people may take citizenship for granted, anyone need only turn on the news to see just how important it is. This lesson plan will help make sure your students understand not only citizenship, but their role in civil society. Find a video lesson that outline

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, your students will feel confident doing the following:

  • describing the duties and obligations of citizenship, including cases of dual citizenship
  • analyzing the role that civil society plays in political life

Length

  • 40 minutes plus 40 minutes for the activity

By the end of grade 12, read and comprehend history/social studies texts in the grades 11-CCR text complexity band independently and proficiently.

Instructions

  • First, ask students what they already know about the idea of being a citizen. What are the duties associated with citizenship? What are the benefits?
  • Then watch the lesson Civil Society and Citizenship, pausing for the following discussion questions:
    • 2:29 - What makes someone a citizen? What does being a citizen guarantee? What does it require?
    • 5:56 - What are some examples of a civic organization that is good for society? What about some examples of a civic organization that is negative for society?
    • 6:49 - What makes civil society so vital and important? How does one participate in it?
