Civil War Debate Lesson Plan

Chris has a master's degree in history and teaches at the University of Northern Colorado.

With this lesson plan, your students will identify issues leading to the division of the North and South. They will debate whether or not secession can be avoided as representatives of these geographical regions.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Define major issues facing the United States at the outbreak of the Civil War
  • Identify 19th-century American attitudes about secession and division
  • Debate the positions of both Northern and Southern cultures regarding the election of Lincoln and secession of the South
