To manage middle school students teachers have to capture their attention, interest, and keep them focused. This lesson discusses management strategies in the math classroom.

What is classroom management?

Mr. James Collins was a sixth grade teacher and he was invited to give a talk to a group of middle school teachers on classroom management in the middle school. James started off by introducing the topic by stating that classroom management is the teacher's way of managing the class so that students can focus on what is being taught without getting distracted by events that are outside of the learning goals. One of the teachers, Anne added that classroom management also involved keeping the students interested and motivated so that they pay attention to the teacher and the lessons they are taught.

Why is classroom management important?

James agreed, and emphasized the importance of good classroom management skills. Good management skills, James said, are important for:

  • increasing engagement between students and the teacher
  • communicating academic expectations
  • fostering a cooperative learning environment
  • creating a positive learning experience for the students

Classroom management techniques for the Math classroom

James then shared with his audience some of the techniques that he uses in his middle school math classroom. James said that this year he had a group of students who were energetic and easily distracted, and that challenged him to come up with a plan to capture their attention and keep them motivated through the lesson.
