Comedy as a Genre Lesson Plan

Use this lesson plan to teach your students about the genre of comedy. You'll use a video lesson to learn about this genre and then students will apply their understanding in activities, discussion questions, and a quiz.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define comedy
  • describe characteristics of a comedy
  • identify characteristics of comedies in text

Length

1 - 1.5 hours

Materials

  • Comedy samples for student analysis, one for each small group

Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.

Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.8.3

Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events (e.g., through comparisons, analogies, or categories).

Warm Up and Preparation

  • Ask students to think about the last thing they read or saw on television or social media that they found laugh-out-loud funny.
  • Once identified, have students write about it for five minutes.
  • Now divide students into small groups and ask them to share their lol moment, noticing and noting similarities of each.
  • Share as a whole group, listing similarities on the board.
