As a teacher, you spend most of your day communicating with many different people. It's important to establish a culture of considerate communication in the classroom environment so you can be more productive and effective as an educator.

The Classroom Environment

What do you think of when you hear the words 'classroom environment'? You might picture a classroom with rows of desks and a variety of supplies around the room. However, the classroom environment is more than just the physical objects; it also includes the various relationships and interactions between people involved with the classroom. This means that you, students, other teachers, administrators, and even parents are all part of the classroom environment.

It's important to recognize what comprises the classroom environment when thinking about considerate communication. This kind of communication, where everyone is equally valued and respected for their ideas, beliefs, and values, is incredibly important for creating an effective and productive classroom environment. This lesson deals with some of the ways you can establish considerate communication in your classroom environment.

Communication With Students

Imagine you walk into a classroom and hear the teacher call one of her students an idiot for not understanding something they are working on. You would probably (I hope definitely!) be appalled at this behavior. You would be appalled because you understand the importance of considerate communication between teachers and students, even if you don't quite realize it.

As a teacher, it's sometimes difficult to remember that every interaction with a student is important and must be thoughtfully and carefully considered. You must always keep in mind the idea of considerate communication when interacting with your students. But, what does considerate communication with students look like?

Considerate communication consists of being positive, caring, understanding, and firm with students. For example, if a student is struggling to follow a certain classroom rule, you might be tempted to yell at them or say, 'No, that's not how you line up to leave.' However, starting off an interaction in such a negative way sets the tone and eliminates the possibility for considerate communication.

Instead, try to remain positive and understanding while still reminding the student about how they are supposed to line up. For example, you could say, 'Now Jimmy, I know you know the rules for lining up. Go back to your seat and try again.' This interaction starts with a recognition that the student is capable and affirms that, through trying, they can get it right.

Consistent considerate communication with students is something that you have to actively work on. But once you get used to rephrasing your communications, you'll start to notice that students reflect that consideration back to you and to other students, creating a considerate environment for everyone.

Communication With Parents

What do you think the typical parent-teacher communication looks like? The truth is, there's no real answer to this question because, like every student, every parent or guardian is different. Only after you get to know individual parents can you anticipate how communicating with them will go. However, there is one aspect of these interactions that is always in your control: how you choose to respond and communicate with them.
