Instructor: Mia Primas

In this lesson, you will learn the steps and calculation for converting 1 metric ton to grams. You will then see how the solution can be written in different formats, including scientific notation.

Steps for converting tons to grams

Tons and grams are both units of weight. In order to convert from one unit to the other, we multiply by the conversion factor. The conversion factor is the ratio of the units set up as a fraction. The unit that we are converting to should be in the numerator. Since a ton is a larger unit than a gram, each step will convert to a smaller unit until the answer is in grams. The following unit equivalencies will be used in the conversion.

1 ton = 1,000 kilograms
1 kilogram = 1,000 grams

Step 1: Convert 1 ton to kilograms.

Step 2: Convert kilograms to grams.
