Converting 12 liters to milliliters can be simple. This lesson will explain how to do it in a way you'll be able to use for a very long time. The methods in this lesson will also be applicable to many other conversions.

Steps to Solving the Problem

To convert a measurement of 12 liters into milliliters will take just three steps. Let's take a look at those steps now.

Step 1 - Find the conversion factor to go from liters to milliliters.

A conversion factor is a number that helps you convert from one set of units to another set of units. Luckily, conversion factors in the metric system are much easier than in the standard system. This is because in the metric system you are only multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000, and so on).

There are 1000 milliliters in 1 liter. To turn this into a conversion factor, we write it as a fraction:

(1000 milliliters / 1 liter)

This fraction is equal to 1, since the amount on the top is equal to the amount on the bottom. In this case, we put milliliters on the top because that is the unit we are converting to.

Step 2 - Multiply the number of liters we have by the conversion factor.

Number of milliliters in 12 liters = (12 liters)(1000 milliliters / 1 liter)

Step 3 - Calculate the numbers and units.

Let's take the easier one first - the numbers. Ignoring the units for now, we have 12 x 1000 / 1. We can see that this is just going to be 12000.

But we are only halfway there - we also need the units. Ignoring the numbers for now, the units for this problem look like this:

(liter)(milliliters / liter)

Since we have a liter on both the top and the bottom, these liters cancel out, leaving us only milliliters.

Solution

Combining the units and numbers from Step 3, we have an answer of 12000 milliliters in 12 liters.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When making unit conversions, there are some of common mistakes you should avoid making:

• Accidentally using the reciprocal
