Cooperative & Collaborative Learning Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is designed to help teachers instruct students about cooperative and collaborative learning. Students will be able to describe cooperative and collaborative learning experiences as well as participate in some of these experiences.

Learning Objectives

After completing this lesson about cooperative and collaborative learning, students will be able to:

  • Summarize the components of cooperative and collaborative learning.
  • Generate examples of cooperative and collaborative learning.
  • Participate in cooperative and collaborative learning opportunities.

  • Watch the ''Jigsaw'' section of the video. Pause at 3: 27 to ask the following:
    • What is a jigsaw activity?
    • In addition to helping students learn content, what are some social skills that students may learn through cooperative learning?
  • Watch the ''Elements of Cooperative Learning'' portion of the video. Pause at 5:04 to discuss:
    • List and describe the five elements of cooperative learning.
  • Watch the ''Additional Examples'' part of the video. Pause at 6:46 to ask the following questions:
    • How is jigsaw II different from jigsaw I?
    • What is reciprocal teaching?
  • What the ''Collaborative Learning'' segment of the video. Pause at 8:47 to discuss the following:
    • What is the difference between cooperative learning and collaborative learning?
  • Watch the remainder of the video.
  • Pass out the printable worksheet to students.
  • Have students complete the worksheet independently. Check answers together as a class.
