- Have students complete the worksheet independently. Check answers together as a class.
Participating in Cooperative Groups
Materials needed: copies of lesson, pens, copies of related lessons
- Divide students into groups of four. Provide each group with a set of materials.
- Have students use What is Collaborative Learning? - Benefit, Theory & Definition to participate in a reciprocal teaching activity according to the following directions:
- Divide into pairs.
- Each pair takes turns reading a section of the lesson.
- While the student is reading, the student who is being read to formulates questions to ask the reader about the content.
- Students discuss questions/answers and then rotate roles and repeat until the lesson has been completed.
- Upon completion of the reciprocal teaching activity, have students take notes about the advantages and disadvantages of using this technique.
- Return to small groups. Have students use What is Cooperative Learning? - Definition & Methods to complete a jigsaw activity according to the following directions:
- Assign each student a segment of the lesson to read. 'The Elements of Cooperative Learning' segment may be divided between 2 students.
- Have each person teach the important information from their segment to the rest of the group.
- Have students take notes on the advantages and disadvantages of using a jigsaw activity.
- Have students use Cooperative Learning: Strategies & Techniques for a jigsaw II activity according to the following directions:
- Have groups assign one segment to each member of the group.
- Have all students who were assigned 'Definition of Cooperative Learning' form a group. Form separate groups for all of the other segments of the lesson as well.
- After reading and discussing the assigned segment of the lesson, have students return to their original group.
- Have students teach the information they learned to the rest of the group.
- Have students take notes on the advantages/disadvantages of using jigsaw II.
