Everyone experiences times in life where they are sad. In this lesson, learn ways to handle the sadness by using coping skills that can help get you through tough times.

Coping Skills

Wouldn't it be great if life was happy all the time? Unfortunately, it is not always full of great experiences. You may have to move to a new town and leave your friends, or maybe end up with a bad grade on a big test. Maybe you get into an argument with your big sister. When these events occur, it is helpful to know how to cope, or get through those tough times.

Talk it Out

One of the best ways to cope is to talk to someone who you trust. You may want to pick someone who can crack a joke or distract you for a few minutes and make you smile! Even if there is not much you can do, sometimes talking things out can make you feel much better.

Sharing your feelings with a friend can be a great coping strategy.

Who should you talk to? Think about the people in your life who you trust and who would be good at listening and giving advice. A friend could be a great resource, especially if he or she is someone who can make you laugh. Adults like teachers or parents can give good advice because they have experience with going through tough times.

Write it Down

If the sad situation that has you down is a little personal, you may feel funny about sharing it with others. In that case, writing your feelings down in a journal is a good way of coping. A journal can be a diary or notebook or even a piece of paper, and it can be completely private.

In your journal, be sure to write some positive things to go along with the negative. For example, after sharing some of your sad or frustrated thoughts, you can set goals for how you can feel better in the coming days.

Look for Outlets

Sometimes challenging events can make you feel stress. Stress is worry that can have a serious impact on your health. One way to help yourself is to find an outlet for your stress. In this case, an outlet can be an activity that helps you reduce stress.
