# Counting Whole Numbers Up to 1,000: Lesson for Kids

Ever wonder how much one thousand is? In this lesson, you will learn what one thousand is, how to count up to and back from one thousand, and even see how you have done one thousand things in your life already.

## If I Had a Thousand Dollars

What would you do if you had one thousand dollars? You might want to buy things like a PS4 or an American Girl Doll. But do you know what one thousand dollars looks like? Would you know what the cashier owes you back in change if you paid with one thousand dollars? We need to take a look at counting whole numbers to one thousand and backwards from one thousand.

## What is One Thousand?

One thousand is shown as 1,000. You would have to count one thousand whole numbers starting from zero and ending with one thousand, just like you would count ten whole numbers to count from zero to ten. A whole number is any number that is not a fraction or decimal.

For example: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are the whole numbers from zero to ten.

You could count those whole numbers to ten really fast. I bet you could even count to one hundred as well. However, counting whole numbers to one thousand takes much more time. Can you think of any ways we can count to one thousand faster?

## Ways to Count to One Thousand

• Counting by ones - I know if I asked you to count to one thousand by ones or count backwards from one thousand by ones, you would have no problem doing it. However, you would be counting for a very long time and its not the only way to count to one thousand.
• Skip counting - Skip counting is when you count using any whole number besides one. There are many ways we can skip count whole numbers to get to 1,000 and backwards from 1,000. We could count by twos, threes, fours, fives, tens, and so on. If we wanted to skip count very fast, we could even count by hundreds! Let's look at some examples on how to skip count to one thousand:
