Create Your Own Nation Lesson Plan

Learning about nations can be difficult until you make it fun for your students. In this lesson plan, your students will discuss vocabulary associated with nations, play a game and create their own nations.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the different components of a nation
  • Design their own nation

Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.

Materials

  • Poster Board
  • Art Supplies (colored pencils, markers, glue, scissors, etc)
  • Magazines
  • Student computers
  • Computer with projector
  • Transparencies of different nations
  • World maps
  • Prizes

Vocabulary

  • Nation
  • National Anthem
  • Flora
  • Fauna
  • Indigenous
  • Citizenship
  • Immigration

Instructions

  • Begin your lesson by asking your students to give you their definition of nation. Allow a few students to give you their definitions.
  • Now, give them the correct definition of nation if no one gave an accurate one.
  • Ask your students to tell you the names of different nations. Write the names of the nations on the board.
  • Next, let your students know that for as many nations as they named there are more. Inform them that there are about 196 nations in the world.
  • Project the vocabulary list on the board now and go over the definitions. Discuss how each word relates to a nation.
